Hi!
This is everything I watched in January and February, and their reviews :)
Warning! Spoilers ahead!!
Movies
The Art of Getting By
Genre: coming of age romance
About: “George, a lonely and fatalistic teen who has made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, is befriended by Sally, a popular but complicated girl who recognizes in him a kindred spirit.” - IMDb
Review:
The dynamic between George and Sally was interesting.
The best thing about Sally is how she was never a typical popular girl. She actually cared about George and made sure he was always ok when she brought him out with her friends.
George on the other hand was quite a handful. He was really lucky that he was surrounded by such amazing people. His mom was an absolute angel, his principal was such a good person, and his art teacher knew he had something in him.
The movie showed a lot of real life problems for teens, from financial struggles to irresponsible parents. The story it told wasn’t so much about romance but more of the way George and Sally changed each other.
I think the character, Dustin, didn’t need to be included so much. His storyline with Sally didn’t sit right with me. Sally could’ve just gone back to her ex instead and it wouldn’t have changed much of the story.
Rating: 3.7/5
Trigger warnings: violence (mild), throwing up (one scene), age gap romance
The Marvels
I finally watched this movie. I didn’t watch it when it released in theatres cause of my hectic schedule and the bad reviews, but it finally released on Disney+ so I instantly watched it with my mom.
Genre: action, adventure
About: “Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels".” - Rotten Tomatoes
Review:
Overall, it’s an enjoyable movie but the plot isn’t good.
My favourite part of the movie was Goose and her kittens. The Flerkens really stole the show whenever they were on screen. They made the movie funny and so much more enjoyable. The scene where the kittens were swallowing everyone for the evacuation was so funny.
I also really liked Kamala’s family. It was so funny in the beginning of the movie when Kamala was switching back and forth with Captain Marvel and Monica. When she came back with Goose and everyone was freaking out, when the fight was over and her family was staring at her with a “seriously?!?!” look and Goose was just sitting casually in the back was SO FUNNY. Her family was so great. They cared about her so much and understood that she’s meant to be a superhero and supported her all the way.
The plot wasn’t great though. The storyline was too simple and short. But my main problem with the movie was the lack of common sense. There were so many instances where the Marvels didn’t think things through. The main two would be that 1. Why would they believe Dar-Benn?! She was down and trapped! Of course she would lie and pretend to accept their offer! They should’ve just taken the bangle from her when she was down… and 2. When Monica said she was going to close the hole from the inside, OF COURSE it meant she wasn’t going to come back! Why were they shocked that she wasn’t going to go back when the hole was closing?? Of course she was going to finish the job and make sure it was completely sealed!
This movie was just a way to kick start their plans for a Young Avengers and start to incorporate X-Men more.
Rating: 3/5 (note: you’ll understand the movie better if you watch: Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and Ms. Marvel)
Trigger warnings: nothing, just a photosensitivity warning for those who may be triggered by the bright lights
Shows
The Big Bang Theory (Season 1 - 6)
Ok so I’m at the halfway mark and I think it’s a pretty good place to give my review on the show
Genre: sitcom
About: Four socially awkward, geeky friends who are scientists, Leonard, Sheldon, Howard and Raj, have their lives changed when a beautiful and free-spirited woman, Penny, moves into the apartment opposite Leonard and Sheldon.
Review:
Sheldon is absolutely hilarious. Without him, there is no show.
Although Sheldon can be mean, he doesn’t realise he’s being mean, AND throughout the show, we really see how much he cares about his friends.
Penny really did change the guys’s lives. She pushed them out of their comfort zones and showed them life outside of a lab.
She helped Leonard to be more confident about himself
She got Sheldon to be less robotic and more human (I love how he’s so comfortable with her!!)
She turned Howard from a disgusting creep to a respectful guy who’s married to an amazing woman (who she introduced him to)
She helped Raj get over his fear of talking to women
The guys changed Penny too
She became kinder
She went from sleeping with random guys to having a stable relationship
She got much smarter / started using her smarts
I love the dynamic between Sheldon and Penny. She challenges him (while still respecting his boundaries like his “spot”) and their bantering or “fights” are really funny. Sheldon didn’t like Penny at first cause she’s the opposite of him, but throughout the show you can see him change his opinion about her and consider her a real true friend who he cares about. He became so comfortable around her and I think it’s partly because she reminds him of his sister.
Howard is probably my least favourite person on the show. I seriously hated how he kept being creepy and hitting on Penny in the beginning and didn’t back off until she told him off, which he then got super hurt from and she had to apologise… AND when he’s married and in a stable relationship, he’s a terrible husband. He spent so much money without consulting Bernadette, he doesn’t do any chores around the house, he basically expects her to do everything while he continues to be a child…
I don’t like Amy very much either. I don’t hate her, but she can be a little annoying and cringey. There’s nothing big, just a few little moments here and there that make me not like her all that much.
I feel like after awhile, there was not much development for Raj’s story.
Rating so far: 4/5. It’s entertaining and very unique.
Trigger warnings: nothing from what I can tell, everything’s mild at most
